"It is not what we give, but what we share, for the gift without the giver is bare." --Unknown
Without a doubt, children and youth are our most precious resource.
And when we instill in them a sense of pride, a sense of accomplishment, of confidence, and a belief that they can achieve their dreams and aspirations, we offer them a future limited only by what their expanded minds can conceive. And, this gift we offer them is the same gift they in turn offer back to the world.
At The Mentoring Group, we believe that anyone can make a difference and that everyone has the potential to achieve academic success and contribute their best to society. Our services assist middle- and high school students to realize their goals in a structured one-on-one school-based mentoring program. The environment is safe for the mentors and the youth because the interactions take place at the school or in a school related setting, or are directly supervised by The Mentoring Group in outings.
It is interesting to note that in a recent study, Public/Private Ventures, a non profit agency, tested the extent of measurable benefits that one national school-based mentoring program afforded youth participants. One of the questions the study explored was: Are there social, behavioral, attitudinal and academic benefits that student derive from mentoring?
The study concluded that student participants of 10 school-based mentoring programs showed overall improvements in academic performance, the quality of class work, the number of assignments turned in and a reduction in serious school infractions, including visits to the principals office, fighting and suspensions. Overall, youth reported feeling more competent academically, and they tended to skip school less often and had fewer unexcused absences.
Another benefit was that these youth were more likely to report the presence of a non-parental adult in their life, someone who they looked up too, who they could talk to about personal problems, and someone who cared about what happens to them, and influences the choices they make. Additionally, these youth were more confident that they would attend and finish college.
Such is the power of one-on-one mentoring. And this is why The Mentoring Group welcomes contributions from new sponsors and business leaders like you to propel this worthwhile endeavor.
Become a Sponsor
Through monetary support and in-kind contributions, corporate and business sponsors can help us reach our goal of serving up to 50 youth in the upcoming school year. Our costs are fairly low, at approximately ______ per youth per school year, while the ROI is immeasurable and can not be calculated.
Another way our business sponsors can contribute is by offering their employees time off to spend one hour per week being a mentor to a youth. This gesture solidifies your commitment to making sure our youth are ready to become good corporate citizens upon graduation from school.
In return for your contributions, financial or in-kind, The Mentoring Group works to:
- decrease the drop out rate of youth in our community schools
- decrease the economic drain on society that occurs when youth leave school unprepared or undereducated
- empower youth to be the best they can be
- produce better skilled employees with better education
- eliminate slums by expanding our youths vision for a better future
- take away the need and cause of violence.
- produce youth who reinvest in the community.
Beyond that, the real reward comes from knowing you or your business helped to empower and expand the vision of vulnerable youth in your community.
Become a Mentor
Contributing your expertise, knowledge and experience can help a youth be successful in academic and social interactions, but there may be something more in it for you as a mentor. Consider the following:
- you will develop a close relationship with your mentee
- you will be re-energized personally
- you have the chance to increase your commitment to your own career, and possibly to expand your impact in your organization
- you will learn more by talking about and teaching things
- you can increase your empathy, listening, caring and building trust skills which may spill over to other parts of your life
- you will grow more confident
- you get to be a part of the accomplishments of your mentee, and
- you will enhance your own self esteem because it just feels good to help others, and it feels good to give.
Anyone Can Contribute
If you would like to volunteer specific services or items you feel would be useful to our program, feel free to contact us. We welcome your suggestions because we sincerely believe that it really does take a village to raise up a youth.
A Safe Environment
Though there are other mentoring programs operating in the school district, unlike some community-based mentoring programs, our plan highlights a commitment to creating a safe environment for our youth and mentor to interact in a non-threatening atmosphere. Our mentoring takes place inside the school or school-related setting, or the activity or outing is directly supervised by the Mentoring Group.
Making the Commitment
Mentoring is the right thing to do, the easiest thing to do, but the hardest to commit to, says Anneice Newkirk, Founder and Executive Director of this young organization.
So, whether you are a student, a prospective mentor, or would like to become a corporate or business sponsor, if youre game, The Mentoring Group will find a place for your energy and enthusiasm.
You are invited to join us in our efforts to lend a hand to every youth who has an outstretched palm, and even to those who are not aware that they could use a hand.
Contact us with your thoughts, your mentoring application in hand, your financial donation or your wisdom. We would love to welcome you on board so that together we experience the power of being united in our goal of raising up a nation of youth ready and equipped for success.
